Why are you in the middle of the F@#king field in a snow storm?

Why do I wake up and reach for pen and pad to scrawl a discombobulated line at two am? Why do I mumble to myself as I peruse the grocery shelves, stare at the shredded wheat and think of fields of barley swaying in meter and verse? Why must every tragedy and blessing be recalled with hidden meanings and metaphors of butterflies or clocks or flying moons? Why must I return to the house if I’ve left without a pen or beg another paper napkin from the waitress? Why do I go for walks through a desolate field in a snow storm?

I was perusing old journals as we approached this last workshop and came across this line that I had jotted down--after walking through a field in a snow storm. Sometimes it's hard to explain exactly why the heck we have to be wandering.

let's get it started

I ran into a clerk at Barnes and Noble, while buying a volume of W.S. Merwin poetry, who said that she wrote fiction and really couldn't "get into" poetry, didn't understand it, often felt confused by it, etc. I offered that reading and writing poetry only enhances fiction writing. I am not sure she was convinced. But I am. However, of late, I cannot find any poetry in my head at all. I don't want to say what I have stuck there--in my head--because it is sad and mundane and boring and distracting. I am also reading The Anthologist (about a stuck poet, more or less) and that's not helping. So, let's get it started. Did you guys talk about the blog at all? I think we need a better name...

It looks like only Karen and the mysterious guy with Russian connections (it's either Kevin or Alexander Ovechkin) so far on the blog.

I think we need to come up with a good, good name for this, as befits this group. The group should discuss...
